Steve Jobs & Your Baseball Players

OK, I’m not going to go all mushy here and express how saddened I am by the passing of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs.  I do feel bad for his close friends & family who are hurting right now, but that’s about the extent of my emotional attachment to the situation.

However, there is one thing about his passing that really openend my eyes.  Steve Jobs was a visionary & leader in the technology & computer world.  His impact is probably greater then any of us will ever know.  What device are you using to read this blog post? A laptop? A phone? A tablet? A desktop?  Jobs had either a direct (apple products) or indirect (everything else) impact on whatever you are using right now. I was never a fan of the Droid phones, until they started following in the footsteps of the iPhone and eventually (in my opinion) passing it.

So what does this have to do with your baseball players?

The way I look at Steve Jobs, Apple, & The Competition is this – 1 guy had the vision and blazed a new trail, that caused everyone else in the industry to either step up their game or throw in the towel.  Apple is blazing the trail in every aspect of personal computing/digital entertainment.  Microsoft/Google/Driod are working their tails off to stay in the game.  Typewriters/Palm Pilots/etc have thrown in the towel.

What category do your ballplayers fall in?  Do you have a Steve Jobs who is out working everyone else on the team.  Trying new things to get better both in training and in competition?  Are the other guys on your team busting their butts to keep up with the team leader?  Maybe trying to pass him to take his spot as the Ace pitcher/starting catcher/etc.?  Do you have a few guys that are dead weight on the team content to play left bench and chase down foul balls?

As a coach/parent it is your job to get your guys motivated to not only be better then the rest of your team, but to be better then they can possibly imagine.  One of my guys said it well the other day when he said, “How can I outwork everyone in the world if I can’t outwork everyone on my team?”

Something to think about, huh?
