I live in the north where it is cold and to be able to practice in the winter I have to do it in my basement. I dont have any hitting nets or anything down there so I am kind of limited. Does anybody know of any good safe hitting drills I could do by myself down in my basement because I dont really have anyone who can help me either. If you could help me with this it would be great thanks
Hand strength is much more important than most young players realize. Get a rubber ball that is about the size of a tennis ball. Squeeze that ball a few hundred times a day with each hand. This will strengthen your hands and forearms and help generate bat speed. Do not worry, this will not give a women forearms that look like Popeye or Steve Garvey.
As for actual hitting, nothing beats hitting a moving target to gain hand-eye coordination. Have someone stand about 30 feet away from you and throw tennis balls to you to hit in the school gym. The shorter distance will help you pick up the ball (see the ball) quicker. The much smaller ball will cause the real baseball or softball to appear that much bigger.
Gaining hand strength and hand-eye coordination will greatly impact your hitting abilities. Good Luck next season!
