…And Bears, Oh My!
OK, I’m not a football fan… AT ALL! In fact I can honestly say that I’ve never watched an entire game at any level – not even the Super Bowl. I know, it sounds crazy for an adult male living in the good old U.S. of A. to say that, but it’s the honest truth.
But I can always appreciate watching an athlete that is the absolute best at what they do. And that is exactly what Walter Payton was – The Best!
Check out the video below and watch how he made impossible moves to get by his opponents and when he couldn’t get past them he ran through them often times carrying them along for the ride. Simply AMAZING!
So how did he get to be arguably the greatest NFL player ever and without question the greatest running back of all time?
His workouts were legendary among NFL players!
“I found this sandbank by the Pearl River near my hometown, Columbia, Mississippi. I laid out a course of 65 yards or so. Sixty-five yards on sand is like 120 on turf. But running on sand helps you make your cuts at full speed. I try to pick the heat of the day to run in, but sometimes that sand will get so hot you cant stand in one place. It’ll blister your feet. You get to the point where you have to keep pushing yourself. You stop, throw up, and push yourself again. There’s no one around to feel sorry for you.” – Walter PaytonNow I’m not saying that baseball players need to do these same workouts, this is different training for a different sport. But what I want you to take away from this post is the commitment to being better then yourself and your opponent every day. When you train harder then you think you can you break down barriers physically but more importantly mentally. Do you think Payton ever worried that he would go up against a guy that out trained him? Doubt it! When you step into the batters box are you afraid that the pitcher can overpower you or has more experience than you? Then change that right now. Go train harder and spend more time seeing pitches to get your experience up. When you get the call from the bullpen are you eager to shut them down or afraid that you might not be able to hit your spots or command your breaking stuff? Then go grab your catcher and tell him that you’ve got a date in the bullpen to take your game to the next level. There is nobody stopping you from taking your game to the next level… except yourself! And this video is… well… just because
